Establishing Support for Catholic Education at St. Mary’s Academy in The Dalles, Oregon
The St. Mary’s Academy (SMA) Foundation was established in 1981 to support Catholic education through financial contributions. Donors can choose from two options to make contributions to the Foundation:
Endowment Fund: Donations to the Endowment Fund are invested, with the principal (corpus) remaining untouched while earnings can be distributed annually to St. Mary’s Academy. Endowment Fund donations are considered lifelong investments.
Donor Advised Funds: Individuals can make contributions to Donor Advised Funds, allowing them to select the fund they would like their donation to be directed towards. Distributions from these funds may include both earnings and the original gift(s). Donor Advised Fund donations are considered short-term, project-based investments.
Currently, the SMA Foundation offers Donor Advised Funds that include the Auxiliary Building Fund (Convent), Elementary Building/Grounds Upgrades Fund, Middle School Relocation Fund, Textbook Fund, Father Levine Scholarship Fund, and the Annual Fund.
The SMA Foundation has been successful in raising Endowment and Donor Advised funds to support Catholic education at St. Mary’s Academy.
Fundraising for both Endowment Funds and Donor Advised Funds is critical, as the annual earnings from the endowment fund are used to support staff and faculty retention and development, as well as to enhance academic programs. Donations to donor-advised funds are also essential to complete large-scale projects that the annual earnings cannot adequately fund.
